 | I have never been so nervous in my life. It was 7:00pm and the sunset was minutes away. Natalie and I were fortunate enough to be in Oahu, Hawaii staying in a house that was on the beach. I was in the bedroom, my hands were sweating like crazy, and I just kept telling myself "C,mon man, you gotta do this". I reached into my red duffle bag, and grabbed the rolled up sock that I stuffed the ring box into. "There it is, just put it in your pocket and casually walk out to the living room and ask her to go to the beach; not a big deal". I took one last deep breath, and quickly took the box and shoved it into my cargo pants pocket; the lower pocket of course (it would be obvious if it was in the regular front pocket). As I walked out into the living room, literally whistling the "X-files Theme Song", no one was there. Just outside, on the porch, I saw her. Natalie was enjoying a laugh with our friend Kathleen. I walked out onto the porch, playing it cool, and said "Let's go watch the sunset. We only have a few minutes before it goes down". She agreed, and started down the sand trail towards the huge crashing waves, and my grand stage. We got to the beach, and my friend Miles was already down there. Kathleen, his wife, join him just ahead of Natalie and I. My heart was beating so fast. "Am I going to be able to do this?" Natalie was a step ahead of me, and staring at the waves and the sinking sun. I reached into my cargo shorts pocket, slightly bending my body to the side to be able to reach the ring. Once I felt the box, it got real, and momentarily froze. Finally, I pulled the box out, and put it behind my back. "This was it, this was the moment!" I thought to myself. I grabbed her hand from standing behind her and she quickly said "Why are your hands so sweaty?" I tried to muster up some words but couldn't come up with a quick answer. At this point, Miles and Kathleen had caught on, but Natalie hadn't. That moment of silence lasted for maybe 5 seconds, but it seemed like an eternity. Finally, I said "Natalie, I love you!" She said, "I love you too Beebah". We hugged like normal; to her. Right after the hug, I did it... I dropped to one knee and grabbed her hand again with my sopping wet palm. Natalie, will you marry me?" I had never heard my voice shutter like it did during that question. She looked and me, and said, "Of course". My nervousness instantly turned to pure joy! Right then, the sun hit the horizon, but I was not watching that. I was staring at someone that was way more beautiful than any sunset could ever be! |
