Nick and Whitney both went to Union-Endicott High School together but since he was a senior when she was a freshman they never talked and only "knew of each other." Nick started working at Highland Park for a summer camp where Danae, Whitney's sister, was Nick's boss. Several years later, when Danae left, Nick took her place and became Whitney's boss when she started working at the same summer camp. Although at first a relationship did not begin, Whitney developed a huge crush on Nick after a wedding that they both attended. The next summer Whitney still had a small crush on her boss and finally on the second to last day of summer camp Nick confessed his feelings for Whitney. After hanging out for five days before Whitney had to go back to East Carolina University, which was ten hours away, they realized that they could not walk away from each other and had to make the relationship work.
Nick and Whitney went through two years of a ten-hour long distance relationship with Whitney at school in North Carolina and Nick in graduate school in New York. After countless surprise visits, phone calls, and texts day in and day out, they went from saying "I like you" to "I love you." People wondered how they could stay together and have faith while living so far apart but it was never a question. Whitney would leave parties to stand outside for hours to talk to Nick and he would leave family poker nights to talk to her. They loved to travel and always made the moments they were together memorable. They celebrated their one year anniversary in NYC, went on a Caribbean cruise for their second anniversary, the Biltmore in Asheville, NC, to celebrate their third year, and finally Wilmington, NC, for their four year anniversary, where Nick asked Whitney to be his wife.
Whitney and Nick decided to go to a Bed and Breakfast in Wilmington for their four year anniversary. Even after her friends joked with her by saying that Nick was going to propose to her during this trip, Whitney refused to believe them because of Nick's inability to keep secrets and surprises from her in the past. When they got to Wilmington, it was later than expected and Whitney was ready for dinner. After walking along the water, which was lit up with beautiful white lights, Nick started acting weird. Whitney quickly pulled out her phone to show Nick her "Yelp" app that showed all the restaurants and food places were in one direction while Nick was leading them in the opposite direction. Finally Nick found the perfect time, when no one was around, to give the perfect speech and ask Whitney to be his forever. After Whitney's reaction of "Oh my god, oh my god!" over and over (and a little bit of crying on both parts) the answer was an easy "Yes"! After sitting down to take in the moment and realize it was really happening, Nick led Whitney to a reserved private balcony at a restaurant where a bottle of champagne was waiting for them. They spent the weekend together with celebratory drinks, walks on the water, and a segway tour. It was the perfect start to their new lives as an engaged couple.
